Located at a distance of around 21 kms. away from the town of Bongaigaon, Abhayapuri is a small town which is a part of the Bongaigaon district of Assam. Situated amidst beautiful greens and hills, the town is a fresh spot of scenic amazement. It is at a distance of around of 200 kms. away from Guwahati.

History of Abhayapuri

Established in the year 1671 by King Chandra Narayan also known as Raja Bijit Narayan, Abhayapuri was the capital city of the ancient Bijni kingdom. Initially the capital was at the modern Bijni town, then it got shifted to Dumuria, which is now known as Dalan Bhanga and then finally to Abhayapuri. The name Abhayapuri is derived from the Devi Abhoyamata which was the family deity of the ruling dynasty in that period.

As per the census of 2011, the population of Abhayapuri is 15,847. In recent years, Abhayapuri has seen a remarkable increase in the population. Out of these, the percentage of males is 52% and females is 48%. The literacy rate of the town is also good with a higher literacy rate than the average Indian literacy rate which is 79%. 

People of Abhayapuri

Koch Rajbongchis which is an Indo Mongoloid group has been living in this part of the area since time immemorial. These people are the original inhabitants of the town who have mention even in the Mahabharatas. Other settlers in the area are the Kayasthas, Kalitas, Yogis and Muslims who came to this area long before the British invaded India.

The major festivals that are celebrated in Abhayapuri are Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Kali Puja, Bihu amongst others. It is not only the Hindu festivals that get celebrated here but Eid is also celebrated with great pomp and gaiety amongst the people here.

Ram Rajar Garh

Ram Rajar Garh is a man-made historical pond that was excavated way back in the 17th century. It was done by Ramsingh I of Ambar Kingdom of Rajasthan during the reign of the Mughal empire.

Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple

One of the oldest temples in Assam, Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple has great historical authenticity. Archaeologists are of the opinion that the temple dates back to 8th to 10th century AD. It was in the year 1974 that the ruins of Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple was born to the notice of Historical & Antiquarian Department of the Govt. of Assam and since then the excavation work had started.

Lungai Pahar Shiva Temple

The specialty of the Lungai Pahar Shiva Temple is that visitors have to climb a total of 227 stairs in order to reach the inside of the temple. There are stone carvings inside the temple of Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kali.
